Graves could answer back
The grave-digging trigger required a shovel and close range. A successful attempt could disturb an undead creature, turn up a small backpack reward, do nothing more than unsettle the grave, or drag the digger toward the earth for damage. Each outcome cost karma.
The original message was blunt: “Thou hath disturbed the dead!”
Services were physical things in the world
Novus used vending stones for eggs, spellbooks, reagents, ammunition, provisions, vendor deeds, shields, smithing menus, and a special dye tub. The Oracle reported karma, fame, and kills. The Stone of Forgiveness removed a murder count for a fee. The Teleport Center, Newby Dungeon, arena, and Help Desk of Hell were made from placed pads, signs, and regions rather than a modern travel interface.
The item list had personality
The custom catalog names Dragon Slayer, Flamesting, War Axe of Kho’saf the Evil, Shield and Shroud of Kho’saf, Sniper Rifle, Holy Hand Grenade, Elven Bow of Slaying, Cloudbow, Windforce, Deepfreeze, Cloudshroud, Frostcloak, and Windcheater.
Some were quest items. Some were staff-associated. Some survive only in containers, with no lawful acquisition path. Redux does not turn every evocative name into ordinary loot.
What we do not claim
The archive supports a shard that experimented aggressively with custom systems. It does not support a universal claim that Novus invented each one first. Where Novus was early or influential, the Chronicle uses the narrower word “pioneered” only when the evidence can carry it.
